Restoration and Redevelopment of the Path to the Collegiata and the Staircase of Via Masolino da Panicale
Year: 2013
Location: Castiglione Olona (VA)
A Historic Heritage Restored to its Splendor
The path leading to the Collegiata and the staircase of Via Masolino da Panicale are fundamental routes for the village of Castiglione Olona, rich in history and a symbol of the area’s identity.
The restoration and redevelopment works aimed to recover their original appearance, address degradation issues, and enhance these routes for the community and visitors.
A perimeter wall damaged by collapses, water infiltration, and inadequate materials was the focus of careful and respectful restoration:
• Consolidation of Masonry: Use of natural lime-based mortars and replacement of degraded bricks with handcrafted elements compatible with the originals.
• Cleaning and Protection: Removal of moss and lichens, biocidal treatment, and restoration of lime mortar joints.
• Roofing Repairs: Installation of handmade bricks shaped identically to the existing ones to protect the walls from infiltration.
The historic staircase, compromised by subsidence and wear, was restored to its primary function while preserving the authenticity of the materials:
• Restoration of Cobblestones: Recovery of original cobblestones and integration with similar elements in shape and color, laid on a stable base to ensure durability.
• Stone Edging: Creation of a safe and well-defined path.
• Integrated Lighting: Installation of LED lighting fixtures to improve evening usability without altering the historic aesthetic.
Every detail was carefully handled, prioritizing solutions compatible with historical materials and traditional techniques:
• Handcrafted bricks and lime-based plasters.
• Broad-spectrum biocides to remove biodeterioration without damaging surfaces
• LED lighting for low visual and energy impact.
A Result for the Community and the Future
The restoration returned two fundamental routes to Castiglione Olona, combining history and modernity. In addition to preserving aesthetic and cultural value, the work ensured safety and accessibility, improving the visitor experience and enhancing local heritage.
This intervention represents an example of how respect for the past can coexist with the needs of the present.
