Location: Asigliano (VC)
The restoration project of the Church of the Blessed Virgin Assumed into Heaven in Asigliano focused on the recovery and preservation of the presbytery vault and the main altar, which had been severely compromised by structural issues and degradation phenomena.
The work, carried out in collaboration with heritage preservation authorities, safeguarded the historical and artistic integrity of the church through consolidation and targeted restoration techniques, ensuring the stability of the structures and restoring their original beauty.
PROBLEMS DETECTED
• Structural Settlements: Widespread cracks and fractures undermining stability.
• Plaster Detachment: Loss of adhesion threatening the historic plasters, with a risk of further collapses.
EXECUTED INTERVENTIONS
• Safety Measures:
– Detailed analysis of critical areas.
– Application of temporary bandages and patches to protect the plasters during consolidation.
• Consolidation and Repair:
– Hydraulic mortar injections to restore adhesion in detached areas.
– Sealing of cracks with fiber-reinforced mortars applied in layers to ensure strength and uniformity.
• Chromatic Integration:
Velature of treated surfaces using pigmented limewash to respect the original color and visually unify the surface.
RESULTS
The intervention restored the stability of the vault and enhanced the historic plasters, ensuring a durable and respectful solution that preserved the artistic character of the church.
PROBLEMS DETECTED
• Structural Instability: Settlements and oxidation of metallic elements caused the partial collapse of the lateral mensa.
• Degradation of Polychrome Marbles: Rising damp and soluble salts damaged the marble surface, leading to exfoliation and dulling.
EXECUTED INTERVENTIONS
• Structural Consolidation:
– Replacement of damaged metallic components with stainless steel dowels and carbon fiber connectors.
– Reinforcement of the masonry using hydraulic plasters reinforced with X-Mesh fiber nets to increase strength.
• Marble Restoration:
– Gentle cleaning to remove dirt and encrustations without harming the surface.
– Specific treatments to eliminate soluble salts and consolidate fragile areas.
– Filling of gaps and reconstruction of missing details, followed by chromatic integration to harmonize the appearance.
• Final Protection:
– Application of a transparent protective treatment to prevent further damage from moisture and external agents.
The main altar was consolidated and restored to its original integrity, achieving a balance between structural functionality and aesthetic enhancement.
The restoration of the Church of the Blessed Virgin Assumed into Heaven serves as an example of a conservation project that combines technical expertise with artistic sensitivity.
• For the Presbytery Vault: Structural safety was ensured, and the authenticity of the historic plasters was preserved, respecting chromatic and stylistic coherence.
• For the Main Altar: Stability was restored, and the valuable polychrome marbles were highlighted and protected for the future.
The intervention returned to the community a place of worship fully restored to its beauty, reinforcing the bond between history, art, and faith.
